So Week 1 was a success; I have already noticed a difference from having my goals up and beautiful, and am also continuing to add all sorta of goals to the board.
Week 2 is about perfecting your 15 second pitch. You're in an elevator with someone you've never met and need to quickly get across to them what it is you do - what do you say? I have done a little work on this before, but I still see the benefit in doing these little exercises. After all, things can only improve, right? My current pitch (which you may have already seen over on the left) reads:
I am a solo electric violinist using digital effects to bring my own unique brand of world, minimalist, soundtrack inspired music to life, creating the lush sound of a whole orchestra LIVE on just one violin.
I'd love your thoughts on whether you feel that accurately describes my music.
Anyway, Ariel suggests a bit of guided brainstorming so here is the result of that little escapade:
1. Genres you play:
Contemporary Classical, World, Minimalist, Soundtrack, Folk, Instrumental, Electro-acoustic, Experimental
2. Artists I sound like
Zoe Keating, Andrew Bird, Phillip Glass
3. People who have influenced me
The artists above, Fourplay String Quartet, Bartok, Bach, Piazolla, Shostakovich, Steve Reich, Terry Reilly, Coda, the ACO, DBR, Yann Tiersen, Les 7 Doigts de la Main, Lewis Carroll
4. The feelings and vibes I want to create with my music
Reverie, trance, dream like, excitement, anticipation, exhilaration, wistful, peaceful, absorbed.
Words I particularly like from this exercise? Soundtrack, minimalist, Andrew Bird, Phillip Glass, Lewis Carroll, dream-like, absorbed, exhilaration, reverie.
I tried using some of these words on 15 second pitch, a nifty little website designed to help you hone your little spiel. Here's my result (with a few grammatical touch-ups):
My name is Jane Aubourg and I am a solo electricviolinist specialising in performance art and composition. I play minimalist soundtrack music that can transport you into a reverie, where you can feel exhilarated, wistful, or peaceful. Have a listen, have a look, have a read and dream away.
I like it, but am considering whether I need to include some sort of "sounds like..." sentence. Maybe...
Sounds like Andrew Bird, Phillip Glass and Lewis Carroll trapped in a dream.
Hmmm....
I'm off to do some reading aloud in front of a mirror and ask Beautiful Fiancé's advice.
Yours concisely,
Jane
