Le Fabuleux Destin de Jane Aubourg

One of my favourite movies of all time is Amelie (or Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain). I have the soundtrack (by Yann Tiersen) on high rotation in my car and am always humming one of the tunes. My favourite track is "Soir de Fête", which translates to Festival Night, and is actually from an earlier album of Yann Tiersen Rue des Cascades.

Since I take a lot of inspiration from this music I decided I would like to try a Yann Tiersen pastiche. It would be largely based on ideas present in Soir de Fête, such as clapping, building up simple layers and a tinkling music box to finish.

I first tried a few clapping rhythms and eventually settled on a 7/8 rhythm, with a few layers to give some interesting polyrhythms. I then came up with a simple chord progression which I will base my layers around.

This was an interesting and unusual thing for me to do. Normally I build up layers by ear, the chord progression becoming apparent when I have finished the piece. Here is a little sample I recorded to get a feel for how it might sound with a violins playing. The quality is rough and the timing is out, but it's not intended to be polished, just give an idea.

I will post some of the layers as I write them, as well as a bit about the music box I plan to use.

As to the accompanying artwork; I would like to do some artwork based on the week and a half spent waiting while the police search was on. Waiting for news is the strangest feeling, one that everyone reacted differently to. I feel like I spent most of the time making about half a million cups of tea and the rest cleaning odd things like oven knobs. With these images of teacups, oven knobs and the ticking kitchen clock, I want to try and convey that surreal moment in time.

I think these two ideas will marry together very well, although I'm not entirely sure what form the artwork will take just yet.

Right now I'm off to pick up my new Behringer MIDI Foot-controller up from the post office! How exciting!

Á bientôt!

Jane
