I am really setting to work on this album now, and it's starting to make me nervous with the sheer amount of the things I want to achieve. Although lots of the ideas I post here are visual, since it is a lot easier to show the initial workings, I have a hundred million musical ideas floating in my head. It's getting very crowded and noisy.
I find I am being quite drawn to this idea of slow stop motion - almost a slide show of similar photos with small changes. I hope it can come into reality as I see it in my head.
Here is a quick sketch I did to outline an idea for a series of photographs in which a caterpillar creates a cocoon from my hair, then emerges as a butterfly (made from painted feathers). I painted the wing pattern under the eye as well on a whim. I think it looks very striking and so I was thinking that the pattern on the face will gradually appear as the butterfly comes out of it's cocoon.
I am conflicted as to whether I should use myself or a model. Since featuring myself as soloist is an important part of the theme (both in the music and most of the other art) it would be more consistent for me to do it. This will make the photo shoot longer process though, since I have to play a big role in adjusting my own hair and makeup between each photo. Lots of mirrors?
Descisions, decisions. I also must decide what butterfly to use. It this sketch I have painted a Monarch Butterfly, because I love the colours and patterns. Upon further research, however, it seems the Monarch caterpillar makes it's cocoon not by spinning it on the outside of it's body, but by shedding a layer of it's skin. The layer underneath then engulfs the caterpillar to form a cocoon. Absolutely fascinating, but not fitting in with my creative direction (shakes fist at nature).
Perhaps it could dangle from my ear? Like an earring? It could be made of three layers; the caterpillar, which peels off to become the cocoon, which peels off to become the butterfly...
Yours thoughtfully,
Jane
PS. A big photo shoot planned for early Friday morn on the driveway with my beautiful Edwardian chair. I promise a sneak peak when it's done!
